Oaklea Middle School eighth grade teacher, Ceri Burke partnered with teaching artist Maiya Becker on recycled art projects that related to their language arts reading The Zebra, a short story about a boy who turns to recycled art when he is injured and can no longer run.
Maiya challenged students to think about the environment, creative resuse, and self-expression through recycled materials.
Here are just a few of the student reviews from this three day workshop.
“I was really curious about how people in real life make trash art and now I know. It was a lot of fun to look at all the amazing trash you and other people have made. I didn’t know trash could turn into such cool stuff.”
“Thank you so much. You showed me a different way to look at life!”
“Thank you for inspiring me to use materials in a new way! I really love this kind of art.”
“Thank you for letting me express who I am.”
“Thank you so much for coming out and teaching us how to do so many different art projects with recycled material. We have 7 people in our family so I will have plenty of recycled materials to make lots of art projects.”
